The police watchdog has initiated an independent investigation into the death of a 16-year-old boy who tragically died after coming off a motorbike in Pontefract. Logan Stead was riding along Eastbourne Terrace on 13 July when the incident occurred, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) confirmed it is looking into the circumstances that preceded the fatal collision.
West Yorkshire Police officers had reportedly spotted the motorbike, carrying Logan and a 13-year-old boy, shortly before 5:00 PM BST on the day of the crash. Concerns were raised about the age of the individuals on the bike, leading officers to turn around to follow the vehicle after it had passed them travelling in the opposite direction. However, the IOPC has clarified that there was no police pursuit of the motorbike prior to the collision.
A 13-year-old boy, who was also on the motorbike at the time of the crash, was uninjured but subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. IOPC investigators were deployed to the scene immediately after West Yorkshire Police notified them of the incident, and an independent investigation was formally declared on the same evening.
Emily Barry, IOPC director of engagement, extended her condolences to Logan's family, stating that they have been contacted to explain the watchdog's role and will receive ongoing updates. She emphasised that police forces are under a mandatory requirement to refer incidents resulting in death or serious injury to the IOPC. The investigation will thoroughly examine all aspects of police involvement, including whether appropriate policies and procedures were followed.
Investigators are currently in the early stages of gathering evidence, including obtaining accounts from the officers involved and working with West Yorkshire Police to secure all available footage related to the incident. This comprehensive approach aims to establish a clear understanding of the events leading up to the teenager's death.
