Thirty years ago, a powerful hurricane dramatically reshaped the coastline of Porlock Bay in Somerset. In October 1996, the storm surge overwhelmed and breached the shingle ridge that had long protected agricultural land from the Bristol Channel. Instead of repairing the defences, a decision was made to allow the sea to reclaim the land, leading to the natural formation of a new saltmarsh ecosystem.
