The steel town of Port Talbot is on the cusp of a major overhaul as a £5 million skills boost gets underway. The cash injection, welcomed by Secretary of State for Wales Jo Stevens, promises to equip local young people with the expertise they need to secure well-paying jobs in burgeoning sectors like green energy and advanced manufacturing.
The funding will be funnelled into the existing DWP Youth Hub in Port Talbot via the Tata Steel / Port Talbot Transition Board. An initial £250,000 has been transferred immediately from the Transition Board's Skills Fund, with up to £5 million more potentially available for expansion. This targeted investment aims to kickstart the initiative, providing a vital springboard for young people looking to enter the workforce.
Secretary of State Stevens and Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden both highlighted the significance of the expansion during their visit to the Community Union hub in Port Talbot. "By placing young people at the heart of our economic renewal, we're giving them the tools they need to thrive in sectors like steel and green industries," Stevens said. Meanwhile, McFadden added that the initiative provides vital, locally delivered support that makes a tangible difference to young people's lives and helps businesses secure skilled staff for the transition to clean energy.
The DWP Youth Hub is already delivering comprehensive support for 16-24 year olds in Port Talbot, including on-site jobcentre assistance, mental health and housing support, skills training, careers guidance, and direct links to employers with live job and apprenticeship opportunities. The additional investment will enhance this service by introducing new technology to aid job searches in key sectors like steel, advanced manufacturing, and financial services.
Furthermore, the initiative plans to develop wider outreach youth hubs in smaller communities within Neath Port Talbot and the surrounding area. By doing so, it aims to address geographical barriers to employment and bring opportunities closer to those who need them most. This expansion will involve close collaboration with local colleges and businesses to ensure that young people are equipped with the skills required for success.
