The academic freedom crisis unfolding in Florida has reached a critical juncture with the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) placing New College of Florida on its sanctions list. This move, which follows an extensive investigation into the college's governance, reflects growing concerns over Governor Ron DeSantis's efforts to reshape higher education in the state. The union alleges that DeSantis's allies have orchestrated a "takeover" at the institution, imposing sweeping changes without input from faculty members.
The AAUP launched its investigation in January 2023, prompted by Governor DeSantis's appointment of six new trustees to the college's board. This board has since introduced significant reforms, including course restructuring and programme cancellations, particularly in areas related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Moreover, the college's president was replaced by a confidant of the governor, reportedly with a substantial salary increase.
According to the AAUP's final report, these actions demonstrate a "blatant disregard for academic standards" and a "discriminatory assault on minority rights." The report draws parallels between Florida's recent policies and the state's troubled past, highlighting concerns about academic freedom, equity, and inclusivity. Notably, this is only the 12th university to be sanctioned by the AAUP since 1995, underscoring the gravity of its findings.
While AAUP sanctions do not carry direct regulatory authority, they serve as a warning signal for the academic community, signalling institutions that fall short in upholding academic standards. These measures are published on the union's website and can be lifted if conditions improve. In response to the sanction, New College spokesperson Nathan March dismissed the AAUP's move as a "headline grab" and an overreach of authority.
The broader context for these developments is Governor DeSantis's concerted effort to suppress what he terms "wokeness" in education across Florida, which has seen widespread dismantling of DEI initiatives and academic disciplines. This approach is reflective of his wider conservative agenda, particularly evident during his recent presidential nomination bid.
