More than a thousand people gathered in Memphis to support Justin Pearson, a progressive Democratic state representative, in his bid for a seat in the US Congress. The rally, held at New Direction Christian Church, comes in the wake of four fatal shootings by members of the Memphis Safe Task Force over the past two months, adding urgency to Pearson's campaign.
Pearson, a 31-year-old who has quickly become a prominent progressive voice, declared the campaign a "fight of our lives" to improve the district, state, and nation. He was joined by influential progressive US Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, and Summer Lee of Pennsylvania, underscoring the national significance of the race.
The political landscape in Memphis has been significantly altered by recent developments. Following the US Supreme Court's Callais ruling, which effectively dismantled the Voting Rights Act, Tennessee legislators redrew the state's congressional districts in May 2026. This redistricting carved the ninth district, previously the state's only Democratic district with a substantial Black population, into three new districts, none of which now hold a Democratic voting majority. Representative Lee likened this redistricting to the discriminatory practices of the Jim Crow era.
Pearson's political journey has been marked by activism and rapid ascent. In April 2023, he was expelled from the Republican-controlled Tennessee General Assembly, alongside another legislator, after protesting the lack of gun control measures following the Covenant school shooting in Nashville. He was subsequently reappointed to his seat by the Shelby County Commission, demonstrating local support.
Originally, Pearson had intended to challenge Steve Cohen, Memphis's long-serving Democratic congressman. However, Cohen opted for retirement rather than running in the newly drawn, altered district. Pearson now aims to leverage the significant volunteer base and enthusiasm for progressive politics, hoping to replicate recent victories by democratic socialists in other parts of the country.
The rally also touched upon broader issues, with Representative Ocasio-Cortez connecting Pearson's environmental activism in Southwest Memphis, the city's most polluted area, to larger themes of economic inequality and corporate influence, specifically referencing the xAI data centre and Elon Musk's wealth. She drew parallels between the current political struggle and the civil rights movement, suggesting that the speed of redistricting was a deliberate attempt to undermine progress and calling for a continuation of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy in Memphis.
