Victoria's court of appeal has been urged to dismiss Erin Patterson's appeal against her triple murder conviction. Crown prosecutor Jeremy McWilliams told the court on Thursday that the case against Patterson during her trial was "overwhelming" and that her convictions were "inevitable based on the evidence."
Patterson, 51, is appealing her convictions for the murders of Don and Gail Patterson and Heather Wilkinson, and the attempted murder of Ian Wilkinson. She was sentenced in September to life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 33 years.
Mr McWilliams argued that all seven of Patterson's grounds for appeal should fail, stating that many lacked substance or were not raised by her lawyers at the time. The court also heard arguments on Wednesday regarding Patterson's grounds of appeal, which included claims of irregular jury sequestering and the improper inclusion of certain evidence.
The Director of Public Prosecutions is also appealing Patterson's sentence, arguing it is "manifestly inadequate." The prosecution is seeking for Patterson to be resentenced to life imprisonment without parole. The hearing continues.
