Widespread outrage has engulfed Ukraine following President Volodymyr Zelensky's surprise dismissal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. The sudden decision, taken without public explanation or warning, has sparked fury among the Ukrainian people, military personnel, and civil society organisations, who had come to respect Fedorov for his efforts to root out corruption and modernise the defence ministry.
In Kyiv, hundreds of protesters gathered, predominantly young individuals, brandishing placards bearing messages such as "Hands off Fedorov" and "Stop sabotaging victory!", accompanied by chants of "Shame!". A mere 15 months into his tenure, Fedorov had established a reputation for tackling corruption within the ministry and implementing innovative strategies to enhance front-line performance. His removal has been described by some as President Zelensky's most significant error during his presidency.
The Ukrainian Parliament was scheduled to vote on Thursday on the proposed replacement, Ihor Klymenko, who currently serves as the Interior Minister. Speculation surrounding Fedorov's dismissal centres on friction with Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, seen as more conventional in his military approach, and criticism of the pace of overhauling military mobilisation processes.
Fedorov's tenure was marked by a commitment to modernising Ukraine's defence capabilities, a critical objective for many who view the ministry as burdened by bureaucracy and outdated Soviet-era practices. As a former Minister of Digital Transformation, he played a crucial role early in Russia's full-scale invasion of 2022, establishing a volunteer "IT Army of Ukraine" for cyber-attacks. He later spearheaded the successful "Army of Drones" fundraising campaign and introduced "gamification" elements, rewarding units for strikes against Russian targets.
His focus on high-tech warfare, particularly drones and innovative procurement, continued as Defence Minister. Notably, he requested SpaceX founder Elon Musk to prevent Russia from using Starlink satellites for drone attacks, which significantly disrupted Russian operations. His ministry was also instrumental in recent drone strikes on the Moscow-occupied Crimean peninsula, with Fedorov vowing last month to "cut off" the region from Russia entirely. Following his dismissal, Fedorov posted on Facebook, outlining his achievements and pledging to continue to "defeat the enemy through asymmetry, speed of innovation, and organisational strength."
The repercussions of Fedorov's departure are already being felt within the military, with drone unit commander Pavlo Yelizarov resigning from his deputy commander position in the Ukrainian Air Force in protest, citing it as "a great evil for the country's defence capability." Prominent blogger Serhii Sternenko, an adviser to Fedorov, hailed him as "the best minister of defence in our entire history," lamenting perceived "bureaucratic obstacles" hindering his work.
