A 68-year-old pétanque player has tragically lost his life after being allegedly struck with a metal boule by an 81-year-old opponent in France. The incident occurred at a boulodrome in the French Atlantic resort of Mimizan during a heatwave, where a dispute had broken out between two rival teams.
According to the Mont-de-Marsan prosecutor's office, the 81-year-old man has been arrested and is currently being held in custody. The public prosecutor, Alexa Dubourg, stated that the evidence suggests the 81-year-old man struck the victim with the pétanque boule, which led to a physical confrontation.
The victim did not immediately die from his injuries but collapsed minutes later after suffering a heart attack, according to local radio station Ici Gascogne. This incident has highlighted the intense rivalry between beach pétanque players and those in the town, with one local resident stating that the animosity between the two groups was not previously thought to be at this level.
Pétanque, a popular French game, involves rolling hollow steel balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball. Investigations are ongoing to determine the role of each person involved in the dispute, and the outcome of this inquiry will likely shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
