Miatta Fahnbulleh, the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, is facing what is described as a challenging and potentially controversial decision on whether to approve further drilling.
Jackdaw is a gasfield located 150 miles east of Aberdeen. If operational, it could produce approximately 40,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, potentially displacing 2% of the UK's gas imports over its nine- to 12-year lifespan. Rosebank is a proposed new oilfield 80 miles off the Shetland coast, estimated to contain 300 to 500 million barrels of oil, and is considered the UK's last major undeveloped oil site.
