Qantas' groundbreaking Project Sunrise has moved a step closer to realisation following the successful maiden test flight of its first dedicated Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. The three-hour flight took place in Toulouse, France, the manufacturing hub for Airbus, marking a crucial engineering milestone for the airline's ambitious ultra-long-haul programme.
Project Sunrise is designed to operate direct flights from Sydney and Melbourne to major global cities, including London and New York, bypassing stopovers. These journeys, which could last up to 22 hours, necessitate a specially adapted aircraft capable of carrying passengers and crew comfortably over vast distances. The A350-1000 is being configured with enhanced passenger amenities and operational capabilities to meet these unique demands.
The successful test flight initiates a comprehensive series of evaluations and certifications that the aircraft must undergo before it can enter commercial service. This rigorous process will ensure the aircraft's safety, reliability, and performance align with Qantas' stringent requirements and aviation regulations. Qantas has previously indicated that it expects to launch the first Project Sunrise flights towards the end of 2025.
