Qatar Airways has unveiled a new facial recognition system, dubbed "Fast Pass", at Hamad International Airport (HIA) in Doha, allowing passengers to use their face as a boarding pass for Qatar Airways flights. The innovative technology is designed to simplify the journey through the airport, from self-service bag drop to security gates and ultimately, boarding the aircraft.
Similar to the Face ID function on smartphones, Fast Pass employs biometric verification to identify passengers. Once enabled via the Qatar Airways app after check-in or at self-service kiosks at HIA, the system links a passenger's biometric data with their journey information and baggage details. This creates a digital document that negates the need for physical or digital boarding passes at various checkpoints, promising to reduce document checks and waiting times, especially during peak travel periods.
Participation in the Fast Pass system is entirely optional, with traditional processing methods remaining available for those who prefer them. Passengers are still advised to carry their passports for immigration purposes, as biometric cameras may occasionally require additional verification. Crucially, data privacy has been addressed: information shared with the airport is only accessible for the duration of the trip and is automatically deleted 24 hours after the flight's departure. However, the Fast Pass data remains stored on the passenger's phone, meaning the initial setup only needs to occur once for multiple Qatar Airways journeys from HIA.
While currently exclusive to Qatar Airways flights departing from Hamad International, the airport has indicated its intention to explore partnerships with other airlines in the future. This move could see the biometric technology expanded to a wider range of travellers. This initiative by Qatar Airways and HIA is part of a growing trend in the aviation industry, with other major hubs like Dubai International and Japan's Haneda and Narita airports already employing similar facial recognition systems to streamline passenger flow.
For UK travellers considering a trip to or through Doha, the introduction of Fast Pass offers a potentially smoother airport experience. Qatar is a popular stopover destination for long-haul flights to Asia and Australia, and HIA is a major hub. British citizens do not require a visa for stays of up to 30 days in Qatar. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises travellers to check the latest entry requirements and local laws and customs before travelling. Comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost luggage is always recommended for any international travel.
