Drivers across the UK are bracing for what is predicted to be the busiest summer getaway weekend on the roads in four years, according to new analysis from the RAC. An estimated 12.6 million leisure journeys are expected to take place between Friday, 17 July and Sunday, 19 July, as families head off for the start of the school summer holidays.
The motoring organisation's figures suggest that Saturday, 18 July will see the highest volume of traffic, with approximately 3.6 million individual trips planned. This surge in activity is likely to lead to significant congestion on motorways and key A-roads, particularly those leading to popular holiday destinations such as the South West, coastal areas, and national parks.
The anticipated gridlock is a stark reminder of pre-pandemic travel patterns, with many families opting for staycations this year, further increasing pressure on domestic road networks. The RAC advises motorists to plan their journeys carefully, allowing extra time for travel and checking traffic updates before setting off.
Roads expected to be particularly affected include the M25, M1, M4, M5, A303, and A38. Delays are also probable around major transport hubs and ferry ports as travellers embark on international trips. The influx of vehicles comes as many schools break up for the summer, marking the official start of the holiday season for millions of families.
Motorists are encouraged to ensure their vehicles are in good working order before embarking on long journeys, checking tyre pressure, oil levels, and coolant. Breaking down on a busy motorway can exacerbate delays for everyone and pose a safety risk. The RAC also reminds drivers to carry plenty of water and snacks, especially when travelling with children, to cope with potential lengthy stops in traffic.
