The RAC has sounded a warning to UK drivers over a significant rise in Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) issued in car parks across the country. The motoring organisation points to widespread confusion among drivers about complex parking rules, which vary greatly between private and public car parks, as well as those run by different companies.
Many motorists have been caught out by minor infractions or misunderstandings of parking regulations, highlighting the need for drivers to be vigilant when using car parks. Signage can be confusing, payment methods complex, and time limits unclear, making it easy for drivers to inadvertently breach rules.
The RAC is urging drivers to carefully read signs on entering a car park and understand the payment system in place. A small misinterpretation of a rule – such as parking outside a designated bay or overstaying a ticket by just a few minutes – can result in a PCN, which can range from a £60 fine to the stress and time involved in appealing a charge.
The situation also raises broader concerns about the UK's parking enforcement landscape, where managing traffic flow and ensuring fair treatment for motorists is often a delicate balance. As car park operators modernise and introduce new technologies, drivers must stay informed and cautious to avoid unexpected charges.
