British tennis enjoyed a day of notable success at the HSBC Championships in London on Friday, with Katie Boulter delivering a major upset against top seed Elena Rybakina to secure a semi-final spot. Compatriot Emma Raducanu also progressed to the quarter-finals, marking a strong showing for British players at the prestigious event.
The packed schedule at the Queen's Club was a direct consequence of Thursday's complete washout, necessitating that all three British singles contenders navigate their postponed last-16 clashes. Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, earned her place in the last eight for the second year running with a decisive 6-4, 6-2 victory over Romania's Sorana Cirstea. This win marked her first against a top-20 opponent since her triumph over Daria Kasatkina in Strasbourg in 2025.
Boulter, currently ranked 73rd in the WTA, pulled off the biggest win of her career by ranking, defeating Kazakhstani world number two Elena Rybakina in a marathon two-hour and 39-minute encounter. Boulter prevailed 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, saving 11 break points across the three sets. This thrilling match consumed the remaining daylight on the main court, leading to the postponement of Raducanu's anticipated quarter-final against Uzbekistan's Kamilla Rakhimova, which had been scheduled for Friday night on the Andy Murray Arena.
Rybakina, the reigning Australian Open and 2022 Wimbledon singles winner, had earlier navigated a tough battle against Tatjana Maria to book her meeting with Boulter. Despite a stronger second set from Rybakina, the home crowd rallied behind Boulter, who had secured her last-16 spot with a straight-sets win over Jaqueline Cristian earlier in the day. Boulter's quicker earlier match allowed her to conserve energy, which she effectively utilised to clinch the decisive set in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
Looking ahead, Katie Boulter is set to face Croatian Donna Vekic in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Iva Jovic awaits the winner of Emma Raducanu's rescheduled quarter-final match. The performances of both Raducanu and Boulter have generated significant excitement among British tennis fans, offering a promising outlook for the remainder of the tournament.
