As Indian democracy teeters on the brink, the detention of opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has sparked fresh outrage amidst a mounting youth-led rebellion against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration. The escalating protests in Delhi have seen unprecedented levels of dissent against a powerful government accused of mishandling education scandals and silencing student voices.
Footage circulated online showed police officers physically removing Mr Gandhi, holding him by his arms and legs, as they navigated through a large crowd of protesters and bundled him into a nearby bus. This brazen move has only served to fuel the protests, with thousands continuing to occupy Delhi's streets and social media erupting in condemnation of the Modi government's heavy-handed tactics.
The demonstrations have been mobilised by a burgeoning youth movement known as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which is advocating for comprehensive changes to India's education system and the resignation of the Education Minister. The CJP has emerged as one of the most substantial challenges to Prime Minister Modi since his re-election in 2024, with its message resonating deeply among Indian youth.
Central Delhi remained thronged with thousands of protesters on Tuesday, many in their late teens and early twenties, indicating an unprecedented level of dissent against the powerful Modi government. The previous day saw over 50,000 people take to the streets, marking the capital's largest demonstrations in five years. These initial protests on Monday involved police firing teargas and charging with batons, with some protesters responding by throwing stones. Authorities reported 60 civilian injuries and 118 police personnel hurt, though organisers claimed a far higher number of injured protesters.
The CJP, which has garnered millions of followers on social media since its inception in May, was born out of repeated scandals, including a re-examination for 2.2 million aspiring medical students last month after a question paper leak, and issues related to the online marking of tests for nearly two million high school students. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju defended the government on Tuesday, stating that swift action had been taken, including arrests, and that Mr Modi had called for a "foolproof system" to prevent future irregularities.
Opposition benches in Parliament demanded a discussion on the alleged "brutality unleashed on students" on Tuesday, leading to the adjournment of parliamentary proceedings. Meanwhile, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke urged protesters not to lose hope, stating from atop a lorry, "They want to break our spirit. Do not let them silence you." Many protesters, some having travelled hundreds of miles, have vowed to remain camped at Delhi's Jantar Mantar protest site until the government addresses their demands.
