The UK is bracing for a sweltering weekend as the Met Office issues a rare red weather warning due to exceptional heatwave conditions. Temperatures are expected to soar above 30°C in many areas, posing a significant risk to life and property.
A red weather warning is typically reserved for extreme events like severe thunderstorms or hurricane-force winds, but the current heatwave has prompted the Met Office to issue this highest level of alert across large swaths of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
Already, parts of the UK have seen temperatures rise above 30°C, with some areas experiencing highs of up to 35°C. The Met Office warns that these exceptional conditions will lead to a heightened risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly among vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions.
Residents are also being advised to be on the lookout for thunderstorms and heavy rain, which could result in flash flooding and disruption to daily life. To mitigate these risks, the Met Office recommends staying indoors during peak heat hours and taking regular breaks in cool, shaded areas.
The heatwave is expected to persist throughout the weekend, with temperatures remaining above 25°C in many areas. As such, residents are urged to take precautions to stay safe, including drinking plenty of water, avoiding strenuous activities, and checking on vulnerable neighbours and friends.
