The popular British drama series 'Rivals', an adaptation of Jilly Cooper's iconic 'bonkbuster' novels, has been officially renewed for a third season by Disney+. This announcement comes shortly after the second season began airing, with further episodes scheduled for November, signalling strong confidence in the series' continued appeal.
Based on Cooper's 'Rutshire Chronicles', the show transports viewers to the scandalous and opulent world of the 1980s British upper class, chronicling their intricate schemes and romantic affairs. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the order for a third season, which will consist of 12 episodes, offering an extended dive into the 'Cooperverse'.
Disney+ has teased that the upcoming season will see the 'stakes become higher and the alliances more fragile' as the dust settles from the revelations of season two. Viewers can anticipate new romances, rekindled old flames, and the spilling of 'shocking secrets', promising to elevate the series' signature rivalries to 'the next level'. The statement underscores a world where 'power, passion and betrayal' mean everyone has something significant to lose.
The series boasts a notable ensemble cast, including David Tennant, Aidan Turner, Alex Hassell, Katherine Parkinson, Danny Dyer, and Emily Atack. Executive producers Dominic Treadwell-Collins and Alexander Lamb expressed their delight at the audience's reception to season two, attributing its success to the hard work of the entire production team.
The producers also reflected on the recent passing of Jilly Cooper, who died on 4th October 2025 following a fall at her Gloucestershire home. They shared their sadness that she wouldn't witness the love for the second season but affirmed that she is 'very much with us in spirit' and would have been 'so delighted' by the season three greenlight. The creative team, including Olivier Award-winning playwright Laura Wade and Felicity Blunt, looks forward to expanding the Rutshire Chronicles further.
Much like its predecessor, the second season has been lauded for its authentic 1980s atmosphere, enhanced by a carefully curated soundtrack featuring artists such as David Bowie, Joy Division, and Simple Minds, further immersing audiences in the era.
