Joining Southport from Blackburn Rovers as an 18-year-old, Raya sought the competitive fire that was missing from his Under-21s experience. The Conference was a baptism by fire – physically and emotionally demanding, with Raya facing seasoned opponents who targeted him relentlessly. “I was just 18 or 19, dropped into a league where men double my age were throwing themselves at me,” he remembered, describing the shock and pain of being 'crashed into' on a regular basis.

Though he played only five games that season behind Jason Steele, his time at Southport had set him up for greatness. Fast-forward to recent triumphs: winning the Premier League with Arsenal and joining the Spanish national team, who are among the favourites for the upcoming World Cup.
