Reabold Resources, the AIM-listed investment company focused on oil and gas projects, has confirmed that it is in preliminary discussions regarding a potential takeover of fellow AIM-listed firm Union Jack Oil. The news was announced via a stock exchange statement on Monday, sending shares in both companies into a trading halt pending further clarity.
Union Jack Oil holds a portfolio of onshore hydrocarbon assets, including a significant stake in the Wressle oil field in Lincolnshire, as well as interests in the USA. Reabold, which already owns a stake in Union Jack, has been actively consolidating its position in the UK onshore sector. Analysts suggest that a full acquisition would create a more streamlined operator with greater financial flexibility and operational scale.
The confirmation follows weeks of speculation in the market. Under AIM rules, Reabold was required to announce the talks after a potential bidder approached Union Jack's board. Neither company has disclosed the potential price or structure of any offer, though Union Jack's market capitalisation stood at approximately £12 million before the halt.
For UK investors and pension holders exposed to AIM-listed natural resource stocks, the proposed tie-up highlights the ongoing consolidation trend in the junior oil and gas sector. Smaller producers are increasingly seeking to combine resources to reduce costs and improve access to capital, particularly as the UK government signals a more supportive stance toward domestic energy security.
Brendan Long, an energy analyst at Edison Group, commented: 'A deal would make strategic sense. Reabold has the cash and the vision, while Union Jack brings producing assets and cash flow. It could be a template for how small-cap energy firms survive and thrive in a challenging regulatory environment.'
Shareholders in both companies are advised to await further announcements. A formal offer or a statement confirming that talks have been terminated is expected within the next 28 days under the Takeover Code. Source: London Stock Exchange RNS.
