Real Madrid appear to have emerged victorious in the intense pursuit of RB Leipzig's highly sought-after winger, Yan Diomande. The Spanish giants are reportedly on the cusp of finalising a deal for the Ivory Coast international, following Paris Saint-Germain's decision to withdraw their bid for the 19-year-old talent.
Diomande has been at the centre of one of this summer's most significant transfer sagas, attracting considerable interest after an impressive season in the Bundesliga and a standout performance at the recent World Cup. While Liverpool were initially linked with the player earlier in the transfer window, reports suggested Diomande's preference was for a move to Paris.
However, the landscape shifted dramatically, with Real Madrid now taking the lead. The breakthrough comes just days after Leipzig reportedly rejected an initial offer from Madrid, which was understood to be around €90 million (£76.5 million) plus an additional €10 million (£8.5 million) in add-ons. The anticipated transfer fee for Diomande is now expected to be well in excess of £85 million.
PSG confirmed their withdrawal from the bidding war with a statement released on Sunday, citing a refusal to compromise their financial principles and squad balance. The statement read: “Paris Saint-Germain has this evening formally withdrawn its interest in and bids for Yan Diomande. PSG will not break its principles of rational financial management and squad balance.” This decision comes as a blow to the French champions, who were widely believed to be Diomande's preferred destination.
Diomande is understood to have already agreed personal terms with Real Madrid and is now expected to travel to the Spanish capital for a medical examination. Meanwhile, Liverpool, having missed out on Diomande, have reportedly shifted their focus to PSG's Bradley Barcola as they continue their search for attacking reinforcements.
