Australian actress Rebel Wilson has won a high-profile defamation case against her former co-star Charlotte MacInnes. MacInnes had claimed Wilson defamed her in a series of Instagram posts published in 2024 and 2025, which allegedly suggested she had withdrawn a complaint of sexual harassment against a producer to further her career.
However, Justice Elizabeth Raper ruled on Wednesday that MacInnes had failed to establish the publications caused, or were likely to cause, serious harm to her reputation. The judge also ordered MacInnes to pay Wilson's legal costs.
During the trial, Wilson maintained that she had acted on a complaint of sexual harassment after MacInnes described the incident to her as making her feel 'uncomfortable'. MacInnes denied ever making or withdrawing a complaint of sexual harassment.
Wilson's social media posts were at the centre of the defamation case, with MacInnes' barrister accusing the actress of carrying out a 'complete revision of history' and describing her as a 'fantastical liar'. However, Wilson's barrister argued that his client 'had no motive to lie' and that MacInnes had withdrawn the complaint because maintaining a positive relationship with the producer would benefit her career.
