A record number of people were referred to the government's anti-terror programme, Prevent, in the year to September 2025. Official data released on Thursday shows a 39% rise in referrals, reaching a total of 10,293, the highest number since records began 11 years ago.
This increase includes a 20% rise in referrals for extreme right-wing ideology, with 2,103 cases compared to 1,480 in the previous 12 months. Referrals for Islamist extremism decreased from 945 to 860.
The Home Office stated that where age was known, 11 to 15-year-olds constituted the largest group of referrals at 36%, followed by 16 to 17-year-olds at 13%.
Security Minister Dan Jarvis commented that the record number of referrals highlights the challenge of protecting the public from terrorism. He added that the programme plays a crucial role in public safety, with over 6,000 people moved away from violent ideologies.
