The UK is bracing itself for an unprecedented heatwave as the Met Office issues its first-ever red weather warning for extreme heat and humidity across a large swathe of England. Temperatures are predicted to soar above 40 degrees Celsius in some areas on Monday and Tuesday, with overnight temperatures remaining unusually high, offering little respite.
The red warning, which is the highest level of alert, covers central, eastern, and south-eastern England, including major cities like London, Manchester, and parts of Yorkshire. While the warning is concentrated in England, an amber warning for extreme heat remains in place for much of the rest of the country, where temperatures are still expected to be dangerously high.
Extreme heat poses significant health risks, especially for vulnerable individuals such as the elderly, young children, and those with underlying health conditions. The Met Office has advised that substantial changes to daily routines will be necessary, and Public Health England is reiterating advice to stay hydrated, seek shade, and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day.
Transport networks are bracing for significant disruption as Network Rail announces speed restrictions across its network to prevent rail buckling. Road users are advised to travel only if essential, particularly during peak heat hours, while employers are urged to consider flexible working arrangements where possible.
The Met Office attributes this extreme heatwave to a plume of very hot air originating from North Africa and southern Europe, intensified by a high-pressure system over the UK. While heatwaves are not uncommon in summer, the intensity and prolonged nature of this event makes it particularly concerning, with the potential to break the UK's all-time temperature record.
Conditions are expected to ease from Wednesday onwards, but temperatures will remain warm, returning to typical July levels. The Met Office warns that the heat is likely to have a lasting impact on communities, especially those vulnerable to its effects.
