England's World Cup quarter-final hopes are hanging precariously in the balance as star defender Reece James faces a fitness battle to face Norway on Saturday. The Chelsea right-back was again forced to sit out full squad training at the team's base in Kansas City, fuelling doubts over his availability for the crunch clash in Miami.
The injury woes plaguing James have been ongoing since he limped off with a hamstring strain against Ghana in Boston, prompting manager Thomas Tuchel to expect him to miss at least two games. With one of those already banked – and potentially a third last-16 tie in the frame – James's prolonged absence is a worry for England fans.
The right-back conundrum just got trickier with news that Jarell Quansah, who stood in against Mexico, has been hit with a suspension. The youngster was sent off during the dramatic victory over El Tri and will be absent for the Norway game, leaving Tuchel to conjure up a plan B at right-back.
Two other England players, Declan Rice and Marc Guéhi, were also seen heading off for individual training in Kansas City. While their absence doesn't seem as alarming as James's, it still adds to the defensive headache facing the manager.
On a more positive note, Jordan Henderson has returned to the squad after suffering an arm fracture against Mexico – and was keen to get back among the lads at team training. Despite being forced out of the tournament, Henderson remains a leader and will be eager to help inspire England to a semi-final spot.
England's favouritism for progression is unchallenged, but Norway are no pushovers after their stunning victory over Brazil. Captain Martin Ødegaard will be looking to his team-mates to get the better of an in-form English side – and silence the doubters once more.
