Reform UK councillor resigns from Leicestershire County Council

Helen Butler, a Reform UK councillor for Shepshed, has resigned from Leicestershire County Council, citing a desire to spend more time with her family.

  • Helen Butler was elected in May 2025.
  • Her resignation means Reform UK now holds 23 of the 55 seats on the council.
  • A by-election will be triggered to select a new councillor for Shepshed.

A Reform UK councillor has announced her resignation from Leicestershire County Council. Helen Butler, who represented the Shepshed division, stated that it had been an honour to serve the town but that she wished to spend more time with her family.

Ms Butler was elected in May 2025, when Reform UK became a minority administration on the county council. She previously served as cabinet member for finances and resources but stepped down from that role in October, also citing family commitments.

Her resignation reduces Reform UK's representation to 23 of the 55 seats on the authority. The Conservatives hold 15 seats, the Liberal Democrats have 11, and Labour has two councillors. There is also one Green Party councillor, one Restore Britain member, and an independent.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Ms Butler said her decision was not easy and that she was proud of her achievements and efforts for the community. She added that her family was the primary reason for her decision, expressing a desire to spend evenings with her young children.
