Remi Wolf has discussed her third album, 'Mud', in an interview, characterising it as "gritty, emotional." The artist stated that the album was a "cleansing record" to create, helping her to heal and process a recent breakup.
Following her previous funk-driven albums, 'Juno' (2021) and 'Big Ideas' (2024), Wolf sought a different approach for 'Mud'. She aimed for songs that could be performed acoustically and still resonate deeply, leading to a more confident sound.
Wolf collaborated with trusted individuals, including Jared Solomon, Jack DeMeo, and Gigi Grombacher, to create the album. She also drew inspiration from artists such as Lucinda Williams, Kurt Vile, America, Paul McCartney, Wings, and Neil Young.
The album's title, 'Mud', reflects Wolf's experience of working through "emotional sludge" and purging feelings. Lyrically, the record explores themes of yearning, longing, and Wolf's journey with sobriety, with songs like 'Bottle', 'Champagne', and 'Wine Drunk' addressing her decision to stop drinking.
