Renegade Zoo, an alt-pop rock band originating from Derry, is garnering attention for their vibrant music and powerful message of inclusivity. Composed of students from the Tuned In Project, an initiative supporting young adults with learning disabilities, the band describes its members as neurodivergent and physically diverse musicians, challenging conventional notions within the music industry.
The group has experienced a busy period, launching their debut album, 'Eyes on the Road', earlier this year at Derry's New Gate Arts and Culture Centre. This milestone was followed by performances at prominent events, including the Foyle Maritime Festival and the Stendhal Festival, introducing their unique sound to wider audiences. Singer and percussionist Sarah Jane Murray, known as SJ, highlighted the album launch as a significant moment, expressing joy at seeing people dance to their self-created songs.
At the heart of Renegade Zoo is a strong emphasis on friendship and creative freedom. Rapper Donna Marie Duddy, or DM, articulated that the band is about "not putting limits on ourselves" and providing opportunities for songwriting, a pursuit she had limited access to before joining. Philip 'Wally' Wallace, the music media teacher at the Tuned In Project, explained that the band naturally formed from students' musical engagement, fostering confidence and self-esteem among its members. He stressed the project's goal of helping students find and amplify their voices through music.
The band's songwriting process is collaborative and often spontaneous. SJ noted that melodies and guitar riffs frequently emerge during rehearsals, sometimes built around ideas brought in by Wally or other members. Singer Sorcha Friel explained that Renegade Zoo's songs often carry a meaningful message or can simply be playful, citing a track called 'Waggledance' that was inspired by a "random conversation about bees." This eclectic approach, blending influences from rock, pop, alt-country, and hip hop, defines their distinctive sound.
Looking ahead, Renegade Zoo is back in the rehearsal room, focusing on new material. While aspirations vary among members, from DM's dream of a UK tour to SJ's more immediate goal of a Northern Ireland tour, Sorcha's ambition remains simple: "More new songs, more just being ourselves." Their journey continues to underscore the power of music as a vehicle for self-expression, confidence, and challenging perceptions.
