North Carolina Republicans have selected state lawmaker Jennifer Balkcom to replace Chuck Edwards as their candidate for the 11th congressional district. The decision was made on Monday after Mr Edwards, the incumbent congressman, withdrew his re-election bid earlier this month.

Mr Edwards' withdrawal followed a US House investigation that determined his conduct towards young female staffers likely amounted to sexual harassment. The US House ethics committee had found he "fostered a hostile work environment and engaged in sexual harassment" towards two female employees in his Washington DC office and recommended censure.

Ms Balkcom will now compete against the Democratic nominee, Jamie Ager, in the November midterm elections. Zach Almond, the state party's executive director, stated that Ms Balkcom secured the nomination by beating five other candidates in the first round of balloting.
