The Yunnan province in south-west China has been home to a peculiar culinary tradition for centuries. A type of bolete mushroom called Lanmaoa asiatica, prized for its delectable flavour, has long been a staple ingredient in local dishes. However, it is the mushroom's unexpected side effect that has piqued the interest of researchers worldwide: when consumed without proper preparation, Lanmaoa asiatica can trigger powerful hallucinations that last for several days.
The visions reported by those who ingest the mushroom are distinctive – tiny people, around 2cm in height, dressed in vibrant colours, are seen engaging in everyday activities like jumping and running within a real-world setting. Unlike the effects of 'magic mushrooms', which contain psilocybin and produce a wider range of hallucinations for a shorter duration, Lanmaoa asiatica is characterised by its long-lasting visual disturbances.
Colin Domnauer, a researcher at the University of Utah, is leading an investigation into the chemical compound responsible for these visions. Despite the intensity of the experiences, scientists remain uncertain about the mechanism behind Lanmaoa asiatica's hallucinogenic properties. Fortunately, cooking the mushroom for a minimum of 15 minutes can effectively neutralise its effects and prevent prolonged visual disturbances.
While popular in Yunnan province, Lanmaoa asiatica is found in limited numbers elsewhere globally, with only one other confirmed location – the Philippines. This restricted distribution means that British nationals are unlikely to encounter the mushroom during international travel, but awareness of its properties remains essential for those venturing to regions where it is found.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises all British travellers to exercise caution when trying local foods and beverages, particularly those foraged or prepared informally. While there are no specific warnings related to Lanmaoa asiatica, understanding local culinary practices can help ensure personal safety.
