Reverend Richard Coles's 2022 novel, "Murder Before Evensong," which introduced his detecting rector character Canon Daniel Clement, has been adapted for the stage. The production is currently being performed at the Watermill Theatre in Newbury.

The story, set in the 1980s, sees Canon Clement's plans to install a lavatory at St Mary's church become entangled with events from the village's Second World War history, which lead to a series of murders. The adaptation, directed by Paul Hart and co-adapted with Shaun McKenna, features seven of the eight actors sharing 16 roles.

Ian Hallard portrays Canon Clement, while Jaz Singh Deol plays DS Neil Vanloo. The production is scheduled to run until 14 November at the Watermill Theatre.
