Richarlison features for Tottenham U21s after Premier League squad omission

Brazilian forward Richarlison, who cost Spurs £60m, played for the club's U21s in the EFL Trophy after being left out of the Premier League squad.

  • Richarlison scored for Tottenham's U21s against Cheltenham Town in the EFL Trophy.
  • He was omitted from Tottenham's 25-man Premier League squad in September.
  • Spurs are the lowest scorers in the top-flight this season with three goals.

Brazilian international Richarlison, a £60m signing from Everton, has been featuring for Tottenham's under-21s side, scoring against Cheltenham Town in the EFL Trophy. This follows his omission from the club's Premier League squad last month.

The 29-year-old forward made only his second appearance of the season, and his first since late August, in the EFL Trophy match. Manager Roberto de Zerbi stated that the decision to exclude Richarlison from the 25-man squad in September was not his, coming after a proposed move back to Everton fell through at the end of the transfer window.

Tottenham currently sit second bottom in the Premier League table and are the lowest scorers in the top flight this season with just three goals. Richarlison was the club's leading scorer last season with 11 goals in 32 appearances.

De Zerbi indicated in September that Richarlison had expressed a desire to leave the club at the beginning of pre-season. A subsequent move to Brazilian side Vasco da Gama also fell through after the player failed to agree personal terms.

Why this matters: Tottenham, who spent £300m on new recruits over the summer, are struggling for goals in the Premier League, making the decision to exclude last season's top scorer a significant talking point.
