Richmond Council, a south-west London authority, is considering new electric outdoor saunas as a potential method to increase its income. The council is researching sustainable models, including electric-powered options, rather than traditional wood-fired saunas.
This initiative comes as the council addresses financial pressures, including a projected £29m annual cut in core government funding by 2029, which represents 58% of its central funding. A major transformation programme aims to save £39m annually by 2029, with raising cash through avenues like outdoor saunas being explored.
The council has issued a notice consulting suppliers to understand the outdoor sauna market and determine if potential opportunities are commercially and operationally viable. The deadline for this engagement is 22 October. The council stated it is exploring public interest in outdoor wellness and recreation, which could offer social, health, and wellbeing benefits for residents, alongside opportunities to generate income for the long-term sustainability of parks and leisure services.
