There has been a recent increase in interest in the death penalty among right-wing politicians in the UK. Rupert Lowe, leader of Restore Britain, has included a manifesto commitment to hold a legally binding referendum on reintroducing capital punishment.
Reform MP Lee Anderson also supports a referendum, suggesting the public would vote in favour of the death penalty. Supporters of capital punishment in Britain have cited polls, such as one that reportedly showed 47% of students favoured its return.
However, surveys that offer specific alternative punishments have historically shown that the death penalty fails to gain majority support in the UK. According to YouGov, 35% of respondents believe it should be available for all murder cases.
