Port Vale Football Club has experienced a remarkable surge in merchandise sales following the announcement of pop icon Robbie Williams as the sponsor for their home and away shirts for the upcoming two seasons. The partnership, which sees Williams' name emblazoned on the club's kit, has driven record-breaking demand, with over 2,000 shirts reportedly sold within the first two hours of their release.
Club officials expressed their surprise at the overwhelming response, noting that sales have significantly surpassed previous expectations. The new shirts, which went on sale on Saturday morning, attracted crowds to Vale Park and generated a substantial volume of online orders. Remarkably, the club has received orders from more than 20 countries worldwide, indicating the global reach of the 'Angels' singer's fan base.
Ben Martindale, Port Vale's general manager, highlighted the unprecedented nature of the sales. "The response has been brilliant," Martindale told BBC Radio Stoke, emphasising the record-breaking figures and the notable increase in online purchases. He added that the popularity extends to markets where Robbie Williams has a strong presence, suggesting that his international fan base is actively engaging with the club's merchandise.
Beyond the shirt sponsorship, Robbie Williams has also taken on the role of charity ambassador for the Port Vale Foundation. This organisation is dedicated to delivering vital community projects across Stoke-on-Trent, focusing on health, education, inclusion, and providing opportunities for people of all ages. Williams described his involvement as a recognition of the place that profoundly shaped him, rather than merely a gesture of 'giving back'.
Williams, who consistently identifies as a 'Stokie' regardless of his international travels, expressed his deep connection to his hometown. Speaking to Port Vale TV, he remarked, "The only real bit of normality that I have in my life is where I come from and the people that are there." He further elaborated on the authenticity of the local community, describing them as "salt of the earth" and "real people," reinforcing his enduring bond with Staffordshire.
The announcement has clearly resonated with Williams' global following. Amanda Ball, who manages the Robbie Williams Fanfest fan group, confirmed that fans from diverse locations, including Chile, Argentina, Mexico, and across Europe, have responded positively to the news. This international engagement underscores the unique synergy between a beloved local club and a globally recognised celebrity from the area.
