Robert Downey Jr, renowned for his iconic portrayal of Iron Man, is making a highly anticipated comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but this time as a new antagonist. The actor, whose last appearance as Tony Stark was in the critically acclaimed 2019 film Avengers: Endgame, will now take on the role of the formidable supervillain Doctor Doom in the upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday.
This ambitious project is designed as the first instalment of a two-part finale for the Avengers saga, promising to bring together a diverse array of characters from across Marvel's expansive multiverse. Fans can expect to see familiar faces such as Chris Hemsworth's Thor, Paul Rudd's Ant-Man, and Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova, alongside the return of beloved X-Men characters.
The first official glimpse of Downey Jr's new role came via concept art shared by Andy Park, Marvel's former visual department director. Park, who concluded his six-year tenure in April, posted the artwork on X, noting that Doomsday was "the final full film I had the honor of leading as Director of Visual Development at Marvel Studios." The illustration provided an initial look at Doctor Doom's mask and also showcased the return of X-Men characters including Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming), Beast (Kelsey Grammer), and Mystique (Rebecca Romijn), who had not been featured in earlier promotional material.
The image also mysteriously includes Tom Hiddleston's Loki positioned centrally, adding to the intrigue surrounding the film's plot. Marvel has maintained a tight lid on plot details, mirroring the secrecy surrounding Tony Stark's death in Avengers: Endgame, a pivotal moment in the MCU's history. That event saw Downey Jr's character sacrifice himself using the Infinity Stones to defeat Thanos, a plot point so guarded that even actor Tom Holland was reportedly misled about filming a 'wedding' when he was actually shooting Stark's funeral scene.
Despite the high level of secrecy, a minute-long trailer released in January showed the Fantastic Four travelling to Wakanda to meet Letitia Wright’s Shuri and Winston Duke’s M’Baku. Additionally, Marvel confirmed last December that Chris Evans' Captain America, Thor, and the X-Men would also be returning through short clips released online. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 18 December, promising a monumental cinematic event for fans worldwide.
