Roglic closes gap on Mas in Vuelta a Espana general classification

Primoz Roglic has moved into second place in the Vuelta a Espana general classification, reducing leader Enric Mas's lead to 1 minute 37 seconds after stage 18.

Primoz Roglic has moved into second position in the general classification of the Vuelta a Espana, closing the gap on leader Enric Mas by over 30 seconds. Roglic, a four-time Vuelta winner, finished fourth in the stage 18 time trial with a time of 35 minutes and 41 seconds.

This result reduces the lead of Spain's Mas, who finished 12th in the stage, to 1 minute 37 seconds in the overall standings. Roglic, riding for Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, also overtook Felix Gall in the standings.

The 32.5km stage, from El Puerto de Santa Maria to Jerez de la Frontera, was won by Swiss time trial specialist Stefan Kung of Tudor Pro Cycling Team. Great Britain's Callum Thornley finished second, three seconds behind Kung.

Compatriot Oscar Onley remains fifth in the general classification after finishing 17th in the stage. He extended his lead over Jacob Omrzel in the young rider's white jersey competition.
