Cristiano Ronaldo has left the Portugal national team squad in Denmark, a decision he announced on social media on Wednesday. The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has confirmed the 41-year-old forward's departure.

Spanish newspaper Marca reported that FPF President Pedro Proenca and manager Jorge Jesus made a last-minute attempt at Copenhagen airport to convince Ronaldo not to leave. However, their efforts were reportedly unsuccessful.

Ronaldo stated that he would explain his reasons for leaving the camp in due course. His departure throws his international future into question ahead of Thursday's Nations League match against Denmark.

The FPF disciplinary code indicates that national team players who leave without permission could face a suspension of one to six months from the national side.
