Australian athlete Rose Davies has achieved a landmark triumph at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing her second gold medal by winning the 5,000m race. This victory makes the Newcastle-born 26-year-old the first woman ever to complete the 5,000m and 10,000m double at the Games.
Davies clinched the shorter distance on Friday morning (AEST) at Scotstoun Stadium, overcoming a strong challenge from her Australian teammate Jessica Hull. Davies, who previously won the 10,000m on the opening day of the athletics program, showed remarkable resolve to prevail in the final metres.
Davies crossed the finish line with a time of 14 minutes 44.53 seconds, with Hull taking second place in 14:45.01. Scottish runner Megan Keith earned the bronze medal, finishing in 14:49.10.
