The Royal Ascot festival is poised to deliver a substantial economic boost to the UK, with an estimated contribution of £140m to the national economy this year. The five-day event, renowned for its top-tier flat racing, is expected to attract around 300,000 fans to Berkshire, drawing visitors from across the globe, including the Gulf region, Japan, Australia, and the United States.
This significant influx of visitors and associated spending is projected to support nearly 2,000 jobs directly linked to the festival. Beyond the immediate impact of Royal Ascot, the broader operations of Ascot Racecourse contribute an estimated £264.5m in Gross Value Added (GVA) and sustain 3,903 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs across the UK economy, encompassing its operations, supply chains, and visitor spending.
The economic benefits are widespread, with research indicating that tickets for Royal Ascot have been purchased from over 70 per cent of UK postcodes. A considerable portion of the visitor expenditure, specifically £50m out of a total £78m generated, is anticipated to occur during Royal Ascot week itself. This demonstrates the concentrated economic activity stimulated by the event in a short period.
The festival's status as a global attraction is a key factor in its economic influence. Ascot Racecourse chief executive Felicity Barnard has previously expressed ambitions to position Royal Ascot alongside other major international events like Wimbledon, The Open, and the Monaco Grand Prix. This strategic vision aims to enhance the festival's marketability and solidify its place as a quintessential moment in the British summer, attracting both domestic and international visitors and investment.
For UK businesses, especially those in the hospitality, retail, and transport sectors in the South East, Royal Ascot represents a crucial period of increased demand and revenue. The servicing of 38,000 hospitality covers by over 30 Michelin-starred chefs alone highlights the premium services and significant expenditure involved, cascading economic benefits through various supply chains.
