Royal Caribbean has officially launched its latest 'Icon Class' vessel, Legend of the Seas, in Europe, marking it as the world's largest cruise ship. Our Cruise Editor, Marc Shoffman, was among the first to experience the colossal vessel, which boasts an array of facilities designed to cater to up to 7,600 passengers. The ship's design incorporates a blend of traditional Royal Caribbean favourites with new, innovative features, aiming to offer a diverse holiday experience.

Measuring 364.84 metres in length, Legend of the Seas narrowly surpasses its sister ships, Icon and Star, by just 4mm, securing its status as the biggest. With a gross tonnage of 248,663, the ship is a floating city of entertainment and dining. Passengers can explore eight distinct districts, each offering unique experiences, from the serene, plant-filled Central Park on deck eight to the vibrant, family-focused Surfside area, complete with an arcade and splash park.

Dining and entertainment options are extensive, with 28 restaurants and 20 bars on board. Familiar Royal Caribbean venues like the all-night pizza spot Sorrento's and the Duelling Pianos bar are present, alongside new additions. A highlight is the 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' show, performed in one of the ship's theatres, reflecting a whimsical theme echoed throughout the vessel's colourful design, including a giant pearl structure at the entrance made of 612 hue-changing LEDs.

For thrill-seekers, deck 16 hosts 'Thrill Island', a 17,010 square foot waterpark described as the world's largest at sea. It features six waterslides, including the formidable 46-foot-high Frightening Bolt with a near-vertical drop. Beyond waterslides, the ship introduces 'Crown's Edge', a unique sky walk and zipline experience that takes guests 154 feet above the ocean, offering panoramic views and a sense of the ship's immense scale.

Royal Caribbean's CEO, Michael Bayley, has stated that the Icon ships are built to balance "tradition, evolution, and revolution." This ethos is evident in the ship's blend of established passenger favourites and groundbreaking new attractions. Legend of the Seas is the third of the 'Icon Class' ships, with four more currently in development, scheduled for delivery in 2029 and 2030, indicating Royal Caribbean's ongoing commitment to expanding its fleet of megaships.
