Gardeners working at London's Royal Parks are set to strike following a pay dispute, their union has announced. The workers, employed by sub-contractor Idverde, rejected a proposed 70p per hour pay increase for skilled gardeners and team leaders.
The GMB union labelled the offer "an insult", stating that skilled gardeners and team leaders are currently paid 55p an hour above the London Living Wage, which is set at £14.80. The union accused Idverde of failing to recognise the workers' skills and experience, treating the London Living Wage as a maximum rather than a minimum.
Anna Lee, GMB regional organiser, called on Idverde to return to negotiations and offer a fair pay deal. A Royal Parks spokesperson stated that pay is a matter for Idverde and expressed hope for a constructive resolution.
