The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) has announced the postponement of its production of Othello, which was set to star Olivier-winning actor Sharon D Clarke. The decision was made as Ms Clarke undergoes treatment for cancer.
The play, directed by Monique Touko, was scheduled to run at the Swan theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon from 13 February to 3 April 2027. Ms Clarke, 60, is known for her role as Lola Griffin in the BBC drama Holby City, and for her work in theatre productions such as Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
Ms Clarke thanked the RSC for their support, stating that "Othello will be my north star as I undergo treatment." The RSC confirmed that ticket holders for the production will receive automatic refunds, and a new production period will be announced at a later date.
RSC co-artistic directors Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey said Ms Clarke's casting as Othello was integral to Ms Touko's adaptation, leading to the decision to postpone to allow Ms Clarke time for treatment.
