At least 30 people have been killed after a mound of rubbish at a major waste site collapsed onto nearby homes in Conakry, Guinea's capital, the government has stated. Another 22 individuals were injured, including six seriously, in the city's Dar-es-Salam area.
The government reported that the collapse occurred around 02:00 local time following heavy overnight rain. Significant resources and personnel, including the military, have been deployed to search for survivors.
Guinea's Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah visited the scene to assess the situation and oversee search efforts. A neighbourhood leader, Lancine Sylla, had earlier expressed fears of a heavy death toll to AFP news agency, stating that 18 bodies had been taken to the morgue. There are fears that the death toll will rise further.
