Russell's absence is a blow to Scotland's hopes of success in the summer Nations Championship – but Gregor Townsend has shown faith in his fly-half options and given Tom Jordan the nod to start against Argentina. The young talent, who has been playing at 10 all season, brings "so much energy" according to his coach, and Townsend is confident he can fill the gap left by Finn Russell.
The return of lock Jonny Gray is a significant boost for the Scots, who have been missing their powerhouse in the second row since the Six Nations. Gray's form since joining Perpignan has been rewarded with a place back in the squad and he'll partner Scott Cummings in the middle lineout – both men set to earn their 50th caps in what promises to be an epic showdown.
Other notable changes see Kyle Rowe slotting into full-back, while Rory Hutchinson takes up the centre spot alongside Tuipulotu. Jamie Dobie's inclusion on the wing means Kyle Steyn shifts from left to right – and George Turner, Elliot Millar-Mills, and Matt Fagerson complete the revamped back row. Townsend knows it'll take time for this new-look side to gel, but he's banking on their depth and squad cohesion to see them through.
Scotland will need all that experience and nous when they face Argentina in Cordoba – but with Tom Jordan at 10 and Jonny Gray leading the charge in the second row, Townsend is feeling optimistic about this summer series opener. He believes his side can use their depth to outlast the Pumas and kick-start their Nations Championship campaign on a high note.
