A Russian artist and prominent critic of President Vladimir Putin has been shot and killed in the eastern Polish town of Biała Podlaska. Robert Kuzovkov, known by his artistic pseudonym Semyon Skrepetsky, was targeted in an attack on Monday where five shots were fired, including one to the head, according to Marcin Kozak, a spokesperson for the district prosecutor in Lublin. Polish authorities have detained two Belarusian nationals in connection with the case, though no charges have yet been filed.
Mr Kuzovkov was recognised for his artistic work which frequently expressed strong criticism of the Russian leadership, including President Putin and Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov. Just three days before his death, he had reportedly travelled to Berlin to stage a protest on Russia Day, displaying a satirical caricature of Joseph Stalin and Vladimir Putin. He had lived in Poland since 2021, having left Russia's Altai region due to fears of political persecution.
The incident comes amidst heightened tensions in Poland, which serves as a crucial logistical hub for military and other supplies supporting Ukraine's defence against Russia. Polish authorities have previously stated that this role has made the country a target for Russian intelligence operations, including espionage and acts of sabotage. Jacek Dobrzyński, a spokesperson for Poland’s special services minister, confirmed that the Internal Security Agency is working closely with police and prosecutors on the investigation.
While the identity of the victim is central to the ongoing investigation, the killing has already sparked discussion within Russian émigré artistic circles. Some commentators living abroad have suggested the attack bears hallmarks of operations previously linked to Ramzan Kadyrov, who has faced accusations of pursuing critics beyond Russia's borders. Mr Kuzovkov had published numerous satirical works mocking Kadyrov and his associates, including a painting depicting Ramzan and Adam Kadyrov as pigs, which he reposted two days before his death.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) travel advice for Poland currently states that most visits are trouble-free but advises vigilance. While there is no specific mention of this incident, any developments in the investigation that suggest a broader security risk could potentially influence future guidance for British nationals residing in or visiting Poland. The incident also underscores the risks faced by critics of the Russian government living in exile, particularly in countries bordering Russia.
The Russian embassy in Warsaw has not commented on the incident. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities focusing on the circumstances surrounding Mr Kuzovkov's death and the potential motives behind the attack.
