A significant Russian military build-up is threatening the eastern Ukrainian city of Kostyantynivka, a location deemed pivotal to Moscow's objective of seizing the entire Donbas region. Ukrainian soldiers on the ground describe the city as effectively a "grey zone," with Russian forces having infiltrated and attempting to encircle it, making it extremely challenging to dislodge them from urban areas.
Kostyantynivka serves as a crucial gateway to the wider Donbas. Should it fall, Russian forces would gain a direct route to Ukraine's last major strongholds in the east, the cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. This would mark a substantial step towards the Kremlin's stated aim of full control over the Donbas, a key strategic goal since the full-scale invasion began.
While Ukraine's Brigadier General Oleksandr Bakulin, commander of the 19th Corps defending the area, maintains that "the situation remains under control" and denies significant Russian success, he acknowledges the presence of approximately 130 Russian soldiers within the city. Reports from Ukrainian officers, speaking anonymously, suggest the ground situation might be more precarious than publicly admitted, with Russian forces managing to accumulate more troops inside the city.
The Russian advance in Kostyantynivka appears to mirror tactics used in other eastern Ukrainian cities, focusing on flanking movements to surround the city and disrupt supply lines. Russian forces are reportedly advancing slowly, sometimes as little as 100 metres a day, using urban structures and summer foliage for cover to avoid Ukrainian drone detection. Russian drone pilots are also prioritising the destruction of Ukrainian drone launch sites to provide their infantry with an advantage.
This renewed pressure in the Donbas comes after months of relative stagnation on the front lines, during which Ukrainian forces claim to have recaptured more territory than they lost and disrupted Russian supply lines. Kyiv has also intensified strikes on Russian oil refineries, aiming to bring the conflict's impact closer to Russian citizens.
The UK Government, through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), continues to advise against all travel to Ukraine. British nationals currently in Ukraine are urged to leave if it is safe to do so. The potential escalation in the Donbas highlights the ongoing volatility and danger across the country.
