  • Thirty-three people were killed and 18 wounded in a Russian glide bomb attack on two civilian buses in Kramatorsk.
  • Donetsk regional head Vadym Filashkin accused Russia of targeting the bus to maximise civilian casualties.
  • The attack is part of a dramatic surge in Russian attacks across Ukraine, with civilian deaths by August 2026 exceeding those in all of 2025.

Thirty-three people have been killed in a Russian glide bomb attack on two civilian buses in the frontline city of Kramatorsk, rescue officials have reported. Another 18 people were wounded in the incident.

Vadym Filashkin, the head of the Donetsk region, accused Russia of deliberately targeting a bus carrying passengers to kill as many civilians as possible. Images shared by local prosecutors showed the burnt wreckage of the bus, along with debris and victims on the road.

This attack follows a dramatic surge in Russian assaults across Ukraine and a significant increase in civilian casualties. The UN reported that more civilians were killed by August this year than in the entirety of 2025. Kramatorsk, which has served as a logistics and supply hub for the Ukrainian military, is now experiencing almost daily Russian attacks.

Filashkin has urged residents of the Donetsk region to relocate to safer areas of Ukraine and has ordered all public transport to cease operations due to the deteriorating security situation in Kramatorsk and Slovyansk. Moscow has not yet commented on the latest attack.

Why this matters: The attack highlights the ongoing conflict and the increasing civilian toll in Ukraine, particularly in frontline cities like Kramatorsk.
