The Russian warship Neustrashimy has conducted a live-fire artillery exercise off the coast of Plymouth, just 40 nautical miles south of the city, prompting concerns about increasing tensions between Russia and the UK. The 30-minute exercise was monitored closely by a Royal Navy vessel, HMS Tyne, which tracked the Russian ship's movements while it carried out the drill in international waters.
According to sources, the Neustrashimy informed HMS Tyne of its intentions and requested the British vessel reposition to a safer distance, which it did. A Ministry of Defence (MoD) spokesperson confirmed that the Royal Navy monitored the exercise and continues to track the vessel's movements. Additionally, a French military aircraft was also involved in monitoring the situation, making radio contact with the Neustrashimy to clarify its activities.
This incident is the latest example of increased Russian naval activity near UK waters in recent months. It follows a high-profile operation last month where Royal Marine Commandos boarded a Russian 'shadow fleet' oil tanker in the English Channel – an unprecedented action by UK armed forces. In June, a British couple sailing their yacht in international waters off the Isle of Wight encountered another Russian warship, the Admiral Grigorovich, which fired warning shots after the couple denied being on a collision course.
The frequency and nature of these recent encounters have raised concerns about maritime security in the region. While Russian warships regularly transit through international waters in the Channel, the timing of this exercise – coinciding with the start of Andy Burnham's premiership – has led to speculation about any potential correlation. UK defence sources have declined to comment on this possibility.
