A Ryanair flight from Pisa issued an emergency Mayday in October 2025 after being unable to land during Storm Amy and coming within 10 minutes of running out of fuel. The Boeing 737, carrying 171 passengers and six crew, was forced to abandon two landing attempts in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
The flight then re-diverted to Manchester, where it landed with 363kg of fuel remaining. This was significantly below the final fuel reserve of 1,101kg. An Air Accident Investigations Branch report concluded that a "breakdown in communication" within Air Traffic Control should have allowed the flight to divert sooner.
The report also noted that pilots did not consider diverting to a nearer airport, such as Newcastle, due to the stress of the situation. The aircraft eventually landed in Manchester at 7:52 pm, after nearly four-and-a-half hours in the air.
