Ryu unleashes a record-shattering storm at Evian Championship, carding an astonishing 11-under-par 60 to catapult herself into a commanding three-shot lead. The South Korean sensation's breathtaking performance - including nine birdies and an eagle - is the lowest round ever recorded in a women's major championship, leaving her opponents in awe.
Ryu's historic achievement narrowly missed perfection on the final hole when a 30-foot eagle putt fell agonisingly short, but she refused to let it dampen her spirits. "I counted my score with my caddie and thought, 'Blimey, that's 11-under-par today!'" she exclaimed, still basking in the glory of her record-breaking round. The 25-year-old's incredible display has left the competition reeling, surpassing the Evian Championship bests set by Hyo Joo Kim (2014), Jeong-eun Lee6 and Leona Maguire (2021) with a flourish.
With this phenomenal performance, Ryu is well on course to claim her second major title in just three weeks, having secured her first at the Women's PGA Championship last month. "It's an amazing dream," she acknowledged humbly, "and I want it to come true. But we have one more day and Akie [Iwai] is a pretty good player - every golfer here is exceptional."
Meanwhile, England's Lottie Woad endured a tough round, posting a one-over-par 72 that saw her slip from first to sixth place on the leaderboard, now nine strokes adrift of Ryu at 10-under par. Charley Gainer (eight-under), Charley Hull and Jodie Ewart (six- and five-under respectively) offer some hope for English fans, but they'll need a miracle to catch up with the record-breaking Ryu.
Japan's Akie Iwai remains Ryu's closest challenger, three shots behind at 16-under par after her own impressive round featuring eight birdies. Her compatriot Mao Saigo and Canada's Brooke Henderson are tied for third place, four strokes back at 12-under par. Henderson's round of 64 included two eagles - a testament to her grit and determination.
